Dracula A.D. 1972
“The pre-credit opening sees us joining the finale of a film that was never made, but looks like it was pretty good. Dracula (Lee) and Van Helsing (Cushing) are locked in mortal combat atop a carriage that is careening out of control across London’s Hyde Park. Remember that Cushing and Lee hadn’t been paired together as Van Helsing and Dracula since the very first film back in the late 1950s, so seeing them together again should have been a big deal, at least bigger than a pre-credit sequence that feels like, ‘We now join our regularly scheduled vampire fight already in progress.'”

Ah, it’s always good to see venerated horror film icon Christopher Lee, even if he decides to pass on the amusing new wave sunglasses.

I think from this moment on, I am only going to refer to him as Dracula. “Dracula stars as Saruman.” “Dracula stars as Dracula.”

If you ever actually do meet him, call him Count Dookula. I dare you.
I bet that pissed him off: George Lucas hires him for Star Wars and calls him Count D-something. I’m sure the crew got an earful.

I’ll conduct the entire meeting whilst wearing those cheap plastic fangs. Sort of like the old Fernwood 2 Night where Fred Willard kept trying to scare Vincent Price (if you have no idea what I’m talking about — seriously, you need to watch you some Fernwood 2 Night) or the “I’m a scary vampire” episode of The Travis and Jonathan Show.

Hammer “go on”
CL “Okay, but this is the last time”
H, 3 months later, “Sooooo how about another dracula then?”
CL “Okay, but this is the last one, really honestly”
H, another 3 months later, “Weeellll what about doing that old dracual fella?”
CL “oh go on then, but don’t ask again”
H “alright…(3 months later)… How about playing dracula for us?”
CL “Sure. But really I swear….

H: “Okay, how’s about playing Drac for us just ooooonnnnnnneeeee mmmmoooooooooorrrreeee time…”
CL: “Well…”
H: “…in a kung fu movie?”
CL: “WHAT?!?! No! Absolutely not! Alright, so I let that greasy little Spaniard sucker me into doing his imbecilic Dracula film. Alright, so I played Fu Manchu about 130 times for Harry Alan Towers. But under no circumstances whatsoever will I appear as Dracula in a bloody kung fu film! Now good day to you, gentlemen– my plane for France leaves in an hour, and I’m due on the set of Dracula and Son in four.”

CL “Did I ever tell you how I hated being typecast as dracula?”
World “yes”
You never saw Peter Cushing complaining, and he was in ‘Biggles-adventures in time’

My favorite quote came after the making of either AD 1972 or Satanic Rites, when Lee said something to the effect of “I have absolutely no interest in ever doing a horror film again, unless it’s an extremely good one.”
Following the basic course of logic, that means Christopher Lee considers Howling II to be an exceedingly good horror film.

If Howling 2 was that good, how did Curse 3 fare?
