The 1980s brought us a number of cynical views of the future in the movies. Cherry 2000, however, is a more cheerful view of what will be. It’s a sometimes odd little movie (Melanie Griffith as a tracker who can easily battle the dangers of the wasteland?), but it does have its share of pleasures, even though it doesn’t quite work overall. You might even think it better than I did. Check the review out and see if it sounds appealing to you.

I think the thing with dystopias is probably more to do with the fact that SF is usually about the present, and there’s not much to be gained in critiquing the present by saying “Hey! Everything is great! You will do fine”.
I have not seen this film, but I might.

I’m kind of worried that in the future my country will somehow start looking like arizona, or possibly an australian desert. also I will have to spend my time dressed like someone off gladiators and drive a beach buggy the whole time.

Sex robot, huh? I wonder if a sex robot would ever start complaining about the grout in the bathroom.

I have to admit, when I came into the middle of this once, that I started snickering right away, but eventually started to find it rather charming.

I haven’t seen it in years, but I recall enjoying it as a light piece of fluff. Not especially memorable, other than Griffith’s presence, but I didn’t regret watching it.
I don’t care so much about the driving dune buggies in deserts part of the post-apoc future, I just hope I don’t have to roller blade around. Not my forte. Hopefully I can get a Landmaster.
I just hope the world isn’t woggos. I’m neggie seeder, and I don’t need no Frauls pushin’ me around.

A good double bill with the Robot Fever episode of Futurama.
