I didn’t plan to have a mini-theme running between the two reviews that constitute this week’s intallment of Month of the Living Dead 8, but there it is anyway:
If you’re tempted to watch Dead Clowns (2003), go rent The Fog (1980) instead.
If you’re tempted to watch Die and Let Live (2006), go rent Night of the Creeps (1986) instead. (Okay, so that’s not so easy to do these days…)
Oh, and something I forgot to mention last week: comments are enabled at Cold Fusion Video Reviews. Let’s give this interactivity a spin!

So are these clowns (no pun intended, or was it?) any scarier than real clowns?

Well, they’re uglier, but they move slower.

I think thanks to the microbudget horror revolution, clowns have officially outlived their scariness. Time to move on to scarecrows.
As for harsh criticism of these films: I’m of the opinion that, the day you put your movie out on DVD and charge me the same amount as I would pay for any other horror movie is the day you deserve to be judged in comparison to those other horror movies. In other words, admiring your pluck and determination to complete a film with so few resources doesn’t automatically make the movie any good, and in the end, it’s your movie, not your inspiring tale of triumph over behind the scenes adversity, that I had to sit through.

I love it when some offended filmmaker pulls out the “If you haven’t made one of my own, you can’t criticize mine!” bleat. I guess that means that the filmmaker never shouts at the TV during a pro sporting event, right, Sparky? Or berates an elected official?

As I always like to put it, I’m no gourmet chef, but I can tell when the milk’s off.

Ooh! Don’t be surprised if I use that line in the next week or two.

That nonsense never ceases, no matter how prominent a reviewer you become. How many times have we heard Ebert’s opinion dismissed on the grounds of “Beyond the Valley of the Dolls LOL”?
