I have covered Albert Pyun. I have covered Andy Sidaris. I have covered David Heavener. I have covered Golan and Globus. I have covered Cynthia Rothrock (at least her non-Hong Kong movies). Now I sample a new source of cinema horror – The Asylum. The Asylum, for those not in the know, is a studio that produces cheap and awful knock-offs of major Hollywood studio movies. Their efforts include movies like The Day The Earth Stopped and Snakes On A Train. Can you guess which movies they are ripping off? How about with the particular Asylum movie I am reviewing this holiday season, Allan Quatermain And The Temple Of Skulls? Read and learn to be aware of The Asylum.

Why not just film a proper version of King Solomon’s mine. There isn’t a real building in the entire book. You mostly need deserts and some South African vistas. Yeah you need extras but if you’re filming in South Africa you can probably get a lot of folks willing to play victorian era Zulu for almost free. And the book is in the Public Domain so you don’t have to pay for it.

Ah, RJ, but then they wouldn’t have had “skulls” in the title.
I’ve always wondered if the folks at Asylum count largely on clueless movie-watchers accidentally renting their films instead of the originals.

Well they could have called it anything they wanted as long as they took the decent adventure story as the base.

One of the reasons the titles and covers are often so misleading is that the film goes into production as one thing, say a knock off of The Mummy, and comes out the other end a knock off of something else, Indiana Jones or whatever big movie is due to hit the cinemas at the same time as this DVD. All they do is change the title and the cover.
