Yes, it’s a cheat; but an El Santo-approved cheat. So there.
LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE (1974)
In which the use of an experimental pesticide device based upon ultrasonic radiation has the unforeseen side-effect of causing the dead to rise up and start chowing down upon the living.
.
And where is local law enforcement while all this is going on? Oh, they’ve got something more important to worry about – like an out-of-towner whose hair touches his collar…

RE: when the 60’s ended…
Lately, I’ve come to be of the opinion that what people normally mean when they say “the 60’s” was really just the opening act for the 70’s.

Is it a cheat, though? I mean, the plot does turn out to rely on generational clashes and kneejerk reactions against hippies or “hippies”.

Yes, “hippies”; it’s a clask of perception rather than a clash in actuality, which isn’t really what Santo had in mind in the first place, but which upon discussion he allowed in as “a perfectly valid stretch of the mission statement”. 🙂
I wonder what it says about me that I ended up picking two films dealing with authoritarian police officers?

British authoritarian police officers, at that.

This is only tangentially related, but you mentioned Plague of the Zombies and it got me wondering if there have been any good traditional zombie films of late? It seems like it mostly gets shifted into a Puppet Masters-style alien invasion scenario these days, but honestly I always thought old fashioned zombies were a pretty creepy idea (although admittedly the tendency to rely on voodoo ups the hoakiness considerably).

on the sixties as opening act: I see the fifties, sixties, and seventies as a textbook case of “thesis, antithesis, synthesis”.

Thomas: well, you could say that a zombie movie *ought* to involve voodoo. I can’t think of any recent good zombie movies of the more traditional kind. Not really my field of expertise, though. Nathan might be able to help you…or at least be able to cite you some recent bad traditional ones.

Didn’t that movie Venom feature voodoo and a guy brought back to life? I didn’t see it, I’m trying to remember from what I heard of it.

Venom did feature voodoo and a guy brought back to life. Something about a voodoo priestess leeching evil into snakes, and the evil-infested snakes biting a freshly-dead corpse.
Or something…it’s kind of a blur.

I take it you’re talking about something other than the Nicol Williamson Venom?

Alas, yes: they’re talking about this; the voodoo/snake business is just a set-up for a slasher movie; it’s not a zombie movie, unless you count the Friday The 13th movies as zombie movies (and we have had that argument!).

Yeah, I definitely wasn’t talking about the Venom Ms. Kingsley reviewed. I should’ve clarified. And if it’s more of a slasher movie, then his being a voodoo zombie wouldn’t really matter.
Wasn’t there a Sci-Fi Channel movie (maybe a few months ago) featuring voodoo? I cannot remember the lead actress in it or I’d look it up myself and see. I’m not saying it had zombies, but it’d be another possibility…

I guess I am just going to have to settle for The Serpent and the Rainbow and leave it at that. But this place has fine muscles even when they’re pushing against nothing. Thanks!

Hmm… Voodoo Curse: The Giddeh, by any chance, Rev? (Sounds like it ought to have kittehs in it.)

Thanks for giving this overlooked little gem a work-over, Lyz. It’s always a pleasure to read anything you write, and especially nice when a provincial UK film. Two in two weeks is spoiling me.
Does anybody else think that L.S.C.L carries as much influence from contemporary UK TV as from NOTLD? You know; the ‘Idyllic village with a Dark Secret’ that formed the plot of at least half of early-70’s /Doctor Who/, and the science-gone-wrong / environmental-horror hand-down from /Doomwatch/. Just a thought…
And by the way, what is a picture of Tower Bridge doing on that “Zombi 3 “poster….?

You might as well ask what “Zombi 3” is doing on that Zombi 3 poster. 🙂
Thanks, Professor! I’m not sure about the specifics of your question, though, because I have no idea how far British pop culture of the time might have permeated Italy and Spain. Anyone? You’re certainly right about that being a staple of British SF at the time, though. (You’re making me want to re-watch The Android Invasion!)

You’re right, of course, the chances of something that specific having influence in Spain or Italy is not too high. Although, as a Spanish director making a film about cannibal zombies from the UK, I have no idea how he managed to avoid the temptation to have one of them about to chow down on a liver, then suddenly pause for a second and go “I’m not eating this Foreign muck….where d’you get some fish-and-chips round here? FWOOR! Nice pair, luv.”, in the same was that Bub retains some of his memories from when he was ‘alive’.

And the zombies do pretty much say, “Nice pair, luv” – unfortunately, also in a culinary context.

Ms. Kingsley–no, that’s not the one I was thinking of. Recalling Foy’s review of it, voodoo had barely anything to do with it.
The one I’m thinking of actually had an actress people would recognize (I had thought Shannon Doherty but it wasn’t her). I only caught the end of it, but a voodoo priestess was involved, and there was a huge ceremony going on during the climax with the priestess trying to zombify either the lead actress or some guy (brother/lover/something or other). Dammit this is going to drive me bonkers until I remember it.
Trying to find it on the internet, I ran into a couple of voodoo-related movies that have drawn my interest, so I guess it’s not a total loss…
“(Sounds like it ought to have kittehs in it.)”
I almost snorted root beer up my nose reading that. Thanks a lot. 😉
