Considering it’s Bruno Mattei’s last film, I was expecting something monumentally awful. Thus I was a little disappointed when the movie turned out to be merely bad. Just when I thought my expectations were low enough that I couldn’t possibly be let down, good old Bruno finds a way to surprise me yet again.

So it was called the ‘beginning’ because it was, eh, um, yeah, there is some Italian tax break for movies called ‘Zombie ‘?

I think “The Beginning” is a perfect title for a middle that will never have an end.
Technically, I suppose it might just be a poor translation (poor translation in a Bruno Mattei film? Ooh, there’s a shock). The Italian title is Zombi: la creazione, which makes a little more sense. But the official export title is The Beginning (or The Beginnig), so that’s what I’m sticking with.

Hey, at least this Zombie picture had zombies in it. For a while there, “zombie” simply meant “cheap Italian non-giallo.”

And when you remember that Monster Hunter— aka Zombie 6— is basically an uncredited mix-and-match remake of the first two Halloween movies, even the non-giallo part starts to look optional.

And when you realize the US cut of A Virgin Among the Living Dead was once put out as Zombie 4, even the “movie” part starts to look optional.
