Apparently John Wayne shot some scenes for a movie prior to his death in 1979, which is finally going to receive a DVD release.
“If science fiction western seems like an unusual genre, that’s because it is. Thunder Riders of the Golden West, is a movie set in modern times and tells the story of cowboy truckers who hit the trail in search of $3 million worth of gold in the middle of an atomic bomb test.”

Dang, linking out to my local Chron. Don’t see that every day. It’s a shame I can’t stomach John Wayne, Western Sci-Fi sounds like a lot of fun.

The science fiction Western is an unusual genre? It seems to be a pretty healthy one. Firefly, Trigun, some really random b-movie I saw… i dunno. I can’t think of a sci-fi Western I havne’t liked

Not to mention a certain TV series that was originally pitched as a sci-fi version of a Western called Wagon Train. The ensuing series, of course, went on to become rather better known than the Western it was originally compared to…

Though wait a minute: didn’t John Wayne already hit the trail in search of $4 million worth of gold (after a $6 million investment) in the middle of an atomic bomb test? Oh, yeah… I remember now.

Along the trail you’ll find me lopin’
Where the spaces are wide open
In the land of the old A.E.C.
Where the scenery’s attractive
And the air is radioactive
For the Wild West is where I wanna be!
