It’s still August, and my review is up. Hey, you wait to the last minute and then spend an entire weekend watching a piece of crap like Starcrash. (Believe me, the photo above makes it look a LOT more enjoyable than it really is.)
So what’s Starcrash like? See that guy in the roundtable banner above? Yeah, that’s what pretty much what I’ve been doing for the last 72 hours. You’d think there’d be more entertainment value in blue-skinned aliens, starship battles, space amazons, space cavemen, robots, Caroline Munro in a variety of bikinis, David Hasselhoff…
OK, maybe not David Hasselhoff.

I have a real fondness for this one. From the days ripoffs tended to be absolutely insane and often made by Italians, and got a theatrical release no less.

But David Hasselhoff is the best thing about the Spongebob Squarepants Movie!
…oh what am I doing with my life.

Oh man…I’ve only just realised I saw this film
I saw it when I was young, very young. Like around 4 or 5. I didn’t know, I watched a lot of films as a kid including a lot of sci-fi, and those memories kinda mix together.
I remembered someone with a robot companion, and that companion getting smashed to bits at one point before returning later, and I definitely remembered a giant robotic hand as the bad guy’s space station. I remembered absolutely zero about Caroline Munroe being in it, but then at 4 or 5 I really wasn’t the target market there.
But I didn’t know it was this film, even though I’d heard of Starcrash before.

I still need to see this damn movie already. It’s one of those “Why the hell haven’t I tracked this down yet!?” movies. I really have no excuse.
I also want to say that Caroline Munro is just painfully, heartachingly gorgeous.
Do you suppose that’s what Lyz looks like when she doffs her specs and shakes out her hair? (Although she probably doesn’t wear a get-up like that under her lab coat…OR DOES SHE!?!)

As the alternative is concluding that she doesn’t even wear that under her lab coat, the chivalrous option is to assume that she does.

There was a trailer collection of “dinosaur” movies called “Fantastic Dinosaurs of the Movies” or something to that effect. I liked how they started the tape off with random footage of Caroline Munro in a bikini posing for photographers during shooting for “The Golden Voyage of Sinbad.”

Let’s just say you got the specs part right.

Blake–I actually have that! It was kind of fun; it actually make me want to see The Loch Ness Horror. God, I was so young and innocent then…
And that little snippet of footage was easily worth whatever I paid for that VHS (not much, although it was before DVD so I’m sure it wasn’t too cheap).
Lyz–Does that mean the less chivalrous option is true? You little minx, you. 😀

As I’ve noted before, we are not better off for the fact that you can’t see stuff like this in theaters anymore.

Rev – Yeah, it made me want to see “The Crater Lake Monster”, which I still need to get my hands on. I ended paying about 10 bucks for my copy (bought it at Toys R Us).

Crater Lake Monster is fairly fun (assuming you don’t go in expecting it to knock your socks off), better certainly than the bulk of today’s SyFy ‘Original’ Movies. My thoughts on it can be found here:

Blake–had a chance in high school to rent it from the local Blockbuster but never got around to it. I haven’t seen it since. Someday I’ll grab up the DVD though (it’s out on DVD, right?)
I remember that review, Ken. That’s probably kept me from trying real hard to find it.
Speaking in things in theaters–this weekend our midnight movie offering is Dr. Strangelove. Having finally seen this a few months ago, I’m thinking I need to check it out live and on the big screen…

Ken, Murray Leinster is well-remembered among science fiction fans and scholars. His “A Logic Named Joe” was a remarkably prescient description of PCs and the Internet, for starters. I have several of his books.
More interesting to you movie mavens, he invented the “front projection” special effect, which may be the reason his name was used in this particular case.
Maybe you should go back to letting me proofread ….

Carl —
First, good to hear from you. Second, I didn’t mean to disparage Mr. Leinster; I just noted he was a fairly obscure figure. That in no way implies he wasn’t a talented writer, nor inventor.
Second, once I get back to writing more than two pieces a year, and posting them an hour before deadline, yours will be the first door I pound upon, believe me.
