One of a number of movies John Travolta made while struggling to make a comeback, Eyes Of An Angel is so wrong-headed in so many ways that you have to wonder about the quality of the proposed projects Travolta passed on in favor of making this one.

Does anyone remember White Man’s Burden and She’s So Lovely? Those were a couple of post-Pulp Fiction John Travolta flicks that seemed to have got lost in the shuffle once he reinvented himself. I never saw the former, but BET (Does that channel still exist? Do they show anything meaningful, instead of mainly just music videos?) showed commercials for it all the time before it was released. The commercials for the latter promised a romantic comedy, but the end result was some a lot more bizarre (mainly due to Sean Penn’s unhinged performance).

So what’s the significance of the title?

Just from the box art and title, I’d have guessed Travolta was a guardian angel for the girl; or maybe that he had died and before “earning his wings” he had to watch over the girl. I wouldn’t have guessed the dog was one of the central characters.

Eh, Chicago to LA is about 1750 miles in a straight line, so the dog only needs to keep up a steady 25mph to do it in three days. 🙂
blake: yes, BET is still out there and appears to have original programming; see Wikipedia.
This does sound like a weird blend of “animal crosses country to save kid” with all the mobster stuff. I’d love to know how the script evolved.
