There are WTF? Films that break you in a good way: movies that expose you to new ways of thinking. Movies that broaden your perspective. Movies that give you a new appreciation of the human condition. This is not one of those. This is the opposite of one of those.
Since this is my first review of 2017, as I recover from a terrible case of writer’s block, I’ve decided to take the easy way out for this Roundtable. I’ve decided to review one of the least WTF-worthy (but still mind-boggling) movies of a director who doesn’t seem to have made any other kind of film: Sompote Sands’s Yak Wat Jaeng vs. Jumborg Ace.
(PS — my real WTF! review will be coming in the next couple of days. I’m also working on reviews to fill in the Roundtables I’ve missed.)

“Admittedly, these were movies like Godzilla on Monster Island and Godzilla vs. Megalon (which I hated)…”
Boo! BOO I SAY!!
Anyway, I got ahold of “Johnny Sokko” last year and LOVED it. We really need to show a couple of episodes at T-Fest. I should tell Ken there’s an episode with a stingray monster (even though it’s the saddest episode in the series). “Space Giants” and “Zone Fighter” are the two big ones I’ve still not seen much, or indeed any in the former’s case, of. Well, that and “Spectreman” although the bits I’ve seen of that didn’t thrill me.
I can understand people not enjoying “Ultraman,” and it has its flaws, but I am not on that side of the fence. Even having seen most of the first sequel, “Ultra 7” (which I do recommend – he’s my favorite of the Ultras) years before, I was utterly shocked at how sadistic Ultraman could be. While he does give a neat send-off to the drawing made real, his constant bullying of the dead monster was hard to watch, and occasionally he did horrifying things to his opponents (Dorongo and Jiras in particular).
Why did you have to remind me of the OCR from “Hanuman and the Seven Ultramen”? I HATED those two. Really dug that crazy-ass movie for the most part, though.
The Antigone and “Love Is…” jokes, Earnest Borg Nine, Thaience Force…man, you were on fire with this one. Well done!
