The thing that many films of this general sort get wrong is failing to get us on the protagonists’ side: in this case, they’re having an affair, they’ve killed someone, and so on. I think that the filmmakers simply assume that someone who’s a protagonist is going to get the audience’s support, and it’s pretty off-putting for me. (Lots of manchild comedies in particular tend to mess this up.)
