You deliberately left out the reason why the animals acted up. In IMDB, it lists it in the summary of the movie. I’ve noticed sometimes ‘spoiler’ alerts are not always consistent in that website.
And you’re right, why weren’t the people also affected? That might have been a really interesting movie – Animals attack, People fight back!

If they were to remake this movie with the twist you suggested – both animals and people going crazy and attacking each other – then that would be the rare remake I’d be interested in watching. It would probably be better than the original.
