I was pleasantly surprised that I dug this movie as much as I did, given that I only saw it about five years ago as opposed to when I was a kid. It’s certainly one of the best dragon movies ever made, though when your competition is Dragonheart and Reign of Fire…
Still, top notch flick.

I watched it on A&E one night quite a few years ago. I don’t remember a whole lot of it, but I remember the dragon being pretty cool and it being a bit more brutal than I was expecting.

Yeah, you certainly don’t expect juvenile dragons actually gnawing on princesses in PG flicks. Plus Peter MacNicol’s naked heinie.

Not to mention monks getting roasted alive. For about three or four years Disney was mixing things up a bit with stuff like this, Watcher in the Woods and The Black Hole.

Still love the name ‘Vermithrax Pejorative’.
I had no idea they used some go-motion in ESB, thought Dragonslayer was the first to use it. I do think it’s approach to the subject matter with a more grounded, as you put it perfectly, “overcast, windy, muddy medieval time” is something that the grown-ups can appreciate but hurt its chances with the younger audience at the box office.
Also look for Emperor Palpatine in a fun cameo as a snack, heh. McDiarmid certainly seems to be having a lot more fun than Richardson did.

The only things I’ve seen Richardson in from his last decade of life are this and Time Bandits, and in both he seems like he’s sleepwalking.

Hee, I remember this from back in my wee days. I was haunted by the first girl nearly getting away, and the princess getting munched. Usually the princess is rescued in these situations, and the fact she was Tiny Dragon Chow underlined the dangerousness of the situation and gave the movie heft.

Just recently got this on DVD. It still holds up well for me, especially the dragon effects.

If only someone in the FX department had paid a little more attention to color correction, it would have been even better; there’s a persistent mismatch between the blacks in the shadows on the matted-in dragon and the blacks in the background footage.

I’ll bet that in the pre-DVD era, you never would have noticed that.

Nope, it’s even noticeable on VHS. I remember.
