2008 has been kicked off with an expedition to Mexico and a review of Sinbad of the Seven Seas. It’s going to be a good year.
SINBAD OF THE SEVEN SEAS
I can anticipate a lot of things that would potentially show up as the first shot in a Sinbad the Sailor (as opposed to Sinbad the Comedian, though I can also imagine the first shot in that movie as well, and it’s Sinbad making an exaggerated screaming face and running away in fast motion from a poopy baby diaper), but one thing I never expected was a still shot of Edgar Allen Poe. I didn’t know why Poe would be associated with the opening of a Sinbad the Sailor movie, though I could understand it in a Sinbad the Comedian movie, what with the macabre and all. Luckily, this film begins with a text crawl that explains to me that Edgar Allen Poe wrote a story called ” The Thousand and Second Tale of Scheherazade,” and it is upon that tale this movie is based.

Excellent review. I must hang my head in shame (or smirk in arrogance…whatever comes first) that I haven’t seen any of the muscleman/barbarian films from the 1980s. However, I’m almost dying to see the neon-outline monster brawl at the end of “The Adventures of Hercules.”

Great review, Keith. I love finding gems from the 80’s like this.

As I said in the comments of the site itself, I absolutely LOVE this movie. I would rank it with movies like Plan 9 and Starcrash in the pantheon of “So bad it’s good”. But you’ve definitely made me want to check out those Ferrigno Hercules movies.

That review made me kind of sad about the passing of all that crap that used to show up at my local cinema (now a carpark) and indeed my video store (now a nepalese restaurant)…even crap movies have less character these days….having said that I know it’s all a lot better in my imagination than when I actually sit down and watch it.

I guess it gives us all hope for crap cinema when I read about how Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Movie (or whatever) contains overacting so miserable it could destroy a small planet.

At least the spirit lives on in television.
Or lived.

Basically if Roland Emmerich made the movies he does but for about $100,000 rather than $150 mill, and they were all written by one man chainsmoking in a basement in an afternoon and they could still get released in the cinema then I’d be happy. Essentially I guess my point then would be that Metal Storm: the destruction of Jared what-sit is a better movie than the Phantom Menace.

It’s kind of sad that the new series isn’t nearly as much fun as the 80s movie. Their Hawkmen suck compared to Brian Blessed, and that guy playing Ming isn’t nearly grandiosely evil as he should be. Hell, he comes off like a corporate manager who just happens to rule half the universe. I don’t buy him for a moment as some horrifying tyrant who brings planets to his knees.
Anyway, this Sinbad movie sounds like a bit of a hoot, although it makes me want to track down the Herc movies again rather than see it. Not that I can’t do both…

The Herc movies are on a cheaply priced double feature disc. Go forth!

I just wanted to share this hilarious impression of Sinbad that a friend of mine sent me. I think the guy is dead on. Tell me if you agree.
