There are a zillion DVDs slated for upcoming release, but here are the ones I’m currently most excited about. Which probably tells you more about me than you need to know.
So in chronological order and/or descending degrees of classiness:
On July 22nd, Criterion will re-release Carl Theodor Dreyer’s Vampyr in an expanded 2-disc edition. The film will be in 1.19 “pillarbox” format. Supplementary material will include commentary from film scholar Tony Rayns, a documentay by Jorgen Roos about Dreyer’s career, a visual essay by film scholar Caspar Tybjerg on Dreyer’s influences, a radio broadcast by Dreyer on film-making from 1958, new essays on the film itself from Mark Le Fanu and Kim Newman, notes by Martin Koerber on its restoration, an archival interview with Nicolas de Gunzburg, the original screenplay, and a copy of Sheridan Le Fanu’s “Carmilla”.
September 9th will see the long-awaited release of Classic Media’s double-disc presentation of Rodan and War Of The Gargantuas. The Japanese (English subtitles) and Americanised versions of both films will be included, along with the documentary “Bringing Godzilla Down To Size”.
After numerous delays, Code Red DVD will release the widescreen, uncut (European) version of Chi Sei? / Beyond The Door on September 22nd. Extras include two commentaries, one featuring Ovidio G. Assonitis and the other Juliet Mills (!!); a video interview with Richard Johnson; the featurette “Beyond The Door: 35 Years Later”; and the original trailers. (Edit: – now I’m hearing September 16th.)
And last, and least, but no less dear to my heart, on September 30th Dark Sky Films will release their latest “Drive-In Double Feature”, Barracuda plus Island Fury.

Sept. 9? Damn that’s a long wait…I want me some Gargantuas! And some Rodans too!
I guess that gives me time to snag the Godzilla films CM has put out that I don’t already have, if nothing else.

The classic media godzilla box set is excellent. There are about 4 of the original movies missing but I assume it’s rights issues that are messing that up… not much lostt mostly except for destroy all monsters

I understand that Rodan and Gargantuas are the last of the kaiju films that Classic Media have the rights to.

I understand that as well, and I hope desperately that their respectful, wonderful treatments for the movies they had the rights to will lead to Toho and everyone else involved to giving them the nod for the rest of their kaiju eiga. Besides DAM I’d love to have G vs. Hedorah done by them.
I see they’re even releasing the HB Godzilla cartoon series. I don’t see any extras listed for the two sets for that so far, but frankly it probably doesn’t deserve ’em. Despite being my first exposure to Godzilla, and my much younger self having a great affection for it, my older self to this day wonders what I was thinking.

The problem is that the rights to the remaining movies are owned by other studios. The saddest situation is that Universal (as co-producer of the film back in the day) owns the rights to King Kong vs. Godzilla. That, ironically, was the film most altered in its American version, and hence the one that would profit the most from Classic Media’s “include both versions, compare and contrast” model.
Universal did put out KKvG, and it’s an OK disc, but it pales in comparison to CM’s work. Sadly, I don’t see much chance of Universal revisiting the film, nor them renting it out to Classic.
Oh, and while we’re on the subject, could Columbia re-release that friggin’ Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah / Godzilla vs. Mothra set that they released in *($&~^% ‘standard’ format. The lack of widescreen KILLED those movies, and that disc came out like 10 years ago, so you’d think they could do a revisits.
And get Godzilla vs. Biollante out for Jabootu’s sake.

This corresponds perfectly with the fact that my Gargantuas gray market disc no longer plays. And it is one of my faves, partly because the monsters sprint, partly because the MASER cannons actually hurt the monsters, and partly because it contains yet another hilarious example of Japan selling itself as the peaceful, minding it’s own business victim of ruthless American aggression during WWII.
I agree with Ken — I’d love to see vs. Biollante, vs. King Ghidorah, and vs. Mothra finally get proper releases.

Amen to Ken and Keith. vs. Biollante is one of my top 3 G films of all time.

Rev, I don’t know what your technical situation is, but if your system can handle Region 4/PAL, there’s a widescreen subtitled version of Hedorah available here.

That might be something I’d look into shipping over here. Thank you for the heads up, Ms. Kingsley.
(We’ve got a region-free player just for this sort of thing.)
Mr. Begg–I had forgotten about Universal owning that one. Damn.
Everyone just needs to let CM have the rights to put out awesome versions of all the Toho ouevre. It’s for the greater good!
And I’ll clamour for some decent versions of those Heisei movies. Although they’re not spectacular, GvKG and GvM are at least fairly solid (although the family drama in the latter makes me cranky), which is sadly more than I can say for most of the Millenium series.
And another one here for GvB. My tape won’t last forever dammit…
If I made a G film, Biollante would totally be in it. One of their best monsters, and such an eerie cry to boot.

Sat down and read “Carmilla” in one sitting last night. It was pretty good, if a bit exposition-heavy in the last act. Beautiful imagery, though.
