I don’t often swear, but I can think of no other expression for this except ‘What the fuck?’
The World Sinks Except Japan is undoubtedly one of the best film titles ever.

Minoru Kawasaki is the same director who did the wonderful Calamari Wrestler, and who who just released a remake of The X From Outer Space in Japan.
The World Sinks Except Japan is a parody of a big budget Japanese disaster movie called The Sinking of Japan that was a big box office hit in Japan a couple of years ago.

There was also a Toho disaster movie in the 70’s called The Submersion of Japan, which was shown in America after massive re-editing as Tidal Wave. I gather that the more recent film is a remake of that one.

Yes. Supposedly the novel of “The Submersion of Japan” was written in the 1970s and a satire of the novel “The World Sinks Except for Japan” was published shortly after.

That’s RIGHT, he WAS the guy that did CW. I knew I recognized that name.
I have to see any movie called Executive Koala. Seriously.
All three of those are probably a hoot though, if CW is any indication.
I have to say, though, I’m not sure about his redux of X. Did he just try to make his own film, or did he stick close to the original? That swingin’, stylish future in the original was great, and I don’t see how you’d top it.

I read on the IMDB that “Executive Koala” is a comedy/drama/slasher/kung-fu film.

You’d actually go there with the lesbian scene that keeps threatening to break out while the space captain’s rival love interests are in the shower together. Or that’s how I’d try to top it, anyway.

What kills me is: At the time Japan Sinks was released, here in Korea it was widely believed that Japan actually was sinking and the movie was a forecast of the possible effects!

From what I understand, it’s more of a “re-imagining” ( or re-imaganering?), since it’s more of a political satire. But it does have Guilala in it.
That said, I know absolutely nothing about Rug Cop, though it does sound like it may be an idea whose time has come.

By the way, for the benefit of those pushy people for whom the image is not all they need, Synapse will be releasing these three on 19th November.

El Santo: I can’t say I can argue with that logic.
Todd: “Political satire,” eh? Hrrmmmm.
I suppose I’ll give it a shot at some point, but my enthusiasm’s not where it is with the other ones…

I love this man’s work. The Calamari caught me entirely off guard – I remember babbling to my friend about what a masterful thing it was, a many layered examination of the meaning of fair play in an unfair world, the dissolution and salvation of the Japanese character, only a squid can show us what it means to be a man… he just stared, but I swear, it’s all in there. The World Sinks stuck with me too, a very different bit of business. I can barely remember Rug Cop, but the rest is all splendid.

If Japan is sinking I suggest the large number of giant monsters stomping around probably has something to do with it.

Sad to say (if I’m ruining lyzard’s sarcasm), koalas actually are vicious critters that attack violently if disturbed (my kinda varmint, really). Zoo keepers and anyone else handling them have to take the kind of care usually reserved for big predators. Second nastiest marsupial after the Tasmanian devil, and it’s not that distant a second.
