In The Midas Touch (1997), a children’s fantasy shot by Americans in — where else? — Romania, a youngster finds that the ability to turn objects and people to gold by a single touch is a surprising hardship. Surprising, that is, if you’ve never heard the twenty-five-hundred-year-old myth. (Kids these days, they think they’ve got to reinvent the wheel…)

Does the film ever go into the mechanics of the Midas touch in any detail? I guess he has some measure of control over it? Otherwise (and I know it gets brought-up a lot) it really seems as though the immediate effect of this sort of ability would be to ice-nine the better part of ones surroundings.

It’s only his right index finger. So he can get around pretty well. But if he accidentally touches something with a full-handed grip — like, say, his grandmother — well, oops. (He also almost breaks a tooth on a cheeseburger that instantly turns to gold as he puts it to his mouth.)

If you can turn things into gold just by touching them, do you really need a get-rich-quick scheme? I would think your scheme would be, “touch something and turn it to gold.”

Yeah, but gold isn’t negotiable currency. You’ve got to have an adult to help you exchange the gold, which is what brings the pawn shop folks in.

How long would it take for the CIA to hire this kid as the ultimate assassin. Imagine the guys who control the most shares in Gold would hire hitmen to kill the kid once the news got out because two or three gold people could easily start to dilute the market. Imagine the reality shows that would pay big bucks for the kid to zap things (which could be melted down to pay for vanity projects for the big stars). Eventually he goes into hiding and gets a job turning special items (such as baby booties) into gold for a price.
The scenes practically write themselves. Smart ass bully at school picks on him. Kid flips the bully the bird, bully grabs finger to break it. Bam, gold bully. Now you’re trying to move the gold bully where nobody will spot him, say into the kiln in art class. Build brick shaped molds to turn the bully into bricks that can be easly transported. Of course gold residue is left on the kiln, and in the molds which is how the Treasure Department gets involved (and the CIA bugs their offices so they aren’t far behind). It could be a serious thriller, a comedy, almost anything depending upon how you go with it.
Having said all that I’m glad someone else watched the movie so I don’t have to.

So basically it could be like a bucket of blood but with gold, and fewer goatees.
