Cello (2005)
Even a second- or third-tier Korean horror film is likely to be well worth watching, if only for the technical skill the film-makers usually bring to the production. This one, though, really strained my patience… particularly when it all but revealed its “twist ending” ten minutes into the film.

Perhaps I’m dense, but I haven’t figured out the twist beginning. I’ve rented the DVD, though, and should know by this evening. If I’m disappointed, it will be your fault.

You mean, if you’re disappointed by not being disappointed, it’ll be my fault; but if you’re just disappointed… then, umm… then…
Oh, the heck with it. Let’s just say it’s my fault anyway!

Speaking of disappointment, I can’t tell you what a let-down it was to discover that the sackbutt is nothing but a weird subspecies of trombone. And the krumhorn! With a name like that, I was expecting something out of the dungeon scene in The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T!

Ever actually heard a krummhorn? Or even better, an ensemble of krummhorns? They are something out of Dr. Seuss.
By the way… for anybody who thinks I’m nuts, I’ve posted a Spoiler Page to explain what I meant about the Big Giveaway in this movie. I tried not to give too many details in the review, figuring other viewers might not be as disturbed by it as I was. But to me, it seemed as subtle as a poke in the eye, and every bit as irritating.

Okay, that is bizarre. Who would have guessed a wind instrument could sound like a 60’s-vintage Silvertone electric guitar played through a Bigmuff fuzztone pedal?

SEMI-SPOILERS BELOW…….
So, without giving away too much, the film either copies “Carnival of Souls” or “Jacob’s Ladder”….?

I was trying to avoid naming the films, but I guess I’ve already revealed so much that it really wouldn’t matter. So, yes. I’d lean more heavily toward Jacob’s Ladder, with a dash of Dead of Night for good measure.

Cheers for that. But still and all…..a haunted ‘cello?

So it’s got a big dose of Life On Mars in it (or vice-versa looking considering the date). By which I mean the British Life on Mars, where he’s in a coma rather than the American one where he’s a spaceman or some suc.
