Man, I just could not find a bad ABC Movie of the Week. (Well, OK, there was The Last Dinosaur, which is actually a cousin to this movie. But I reviewed that years ago.) So instead, let us don our breathing gear and flippers, whereupon we may witness the bizarre melange of elements to be found in the Bermuda Depth.

The thing I remembered best about this movie, even more than the giant turtle, was the Vivaldi guitar concerto on the soundtrack. Not that I knew that’s what it was at the time… I found out later when I was working in a record store. People kept asking for “the Kodak film commercial music”, and when I found out what they were talking about, I had to correct them: “No, no,” I’d say, “You mean the giant lovelorn turtle music from The Bermuda Depths…” They’d back out of the store slowly, and I’d go back to my magazine.

Funny story. I was 5 years old when this aired, and I remember at the time catching a glimpse of the scene where they haul up the torn nets. My dad was watching it and told me about a giant turtle that was leaving huge tracks on the beach. I wanted to stay up and see the turtle (giant monsters being all the rage at school) but he sent me to bed.
I never forgot that ancient memory, but I could never subsequently find the film. When I saw Jaws 2 I figured I had royally confused the scene with the scene where Hendricks pulls up the power cable while he’s out on the boat, and my dad was just fooling around with me so I wouldn’t see a killer shark and get nightmares. I also figured I had just confused myself with the timing–Jaws 2 was still in the theater in ’78 and wouldn’t be seen on TV for some time. It wasn’t until I read Ken and Liz’s reviews that I realized it was this film. Thanks, guys! Now I’ll have to close this little circle and look it up on Amazon!
