Just some housekeeping, folks, while I battle a killer work deadline and an even more killer dose of the flu…
I have revised, reformatted and added screenshots to AMPHIBIAN MAN (1962) – damn; it’s been ages since I watched this, and I’d almost forgotten how good it is! – and reformatted and added screenshots to MONSTER FROM THE OCEAN FLOOR (1954), which…isn’t quite as good, but does have its moments.
Sort of. Kind of. If you tilt your head and squint…

Me too! Remember, Sudafed+Nyquil=quite a trip!
One character in Amphibian Man I found interesting from a symbolic point of view is Balthazar, Guitere’s drunken dad who can’t hold onto a dollar any more then he can a greased pig. Could he, perhaps, stand for the easily opiated masses, meaning well but having no more concept of money managment then Ichy, getting blind drunk whenever a little lucre comes their way? He may love his daughter and want to do what’s right, really he does, but, well, all that cash, and his life is so hard, and he just can’t help himself.
The peasants of the old Russian order were seen, even by their champions, as childlike at best and semi-animal at worst, no more able to rise above in intellect over their “baser” instincts then a dog or cow, and that attitude was far more enshrined in the Glorious Struggle For Freedom than was ever admitted. Could Bathazar’s hapless inability to be a self-directed, logical adult be a reflection of this attitude?

Thank you, guys. At least I can breathe today. It’s a start.
That’s a fair theory about Balthazar, Jen, but the other thing to remember is that it is he, the easily opiated mass, who shoves a knife between the ribs of Filthy Capitalism.

My only thought would be “what on earth could panic a top of the food chain predator! RUN!” Seriously, that’s a horror movie premise right there.
Luckily that shark had trained, rational people around.

The blurred picture of the cycloptic cephalopod from MONSTER ON THE OCEAN FLOOR made me really want to see Corman’s original monster.
