What can I say? Life gets dull when your house is 80% uninhabitable. Plus, I managed to knock out nearly a third of my increasingly unmanageable screener pile.
Banshee!!! (2008), in which I don’t know what the hell that thing really is, but it certainly isn’t a banshee…
Colony (1995), in which cheating on a brilliant genetic scientist is a really bad idea…
Gold (1968), which has almost as little to do with gold as Banshee!!! does with banshees…
Hostel, Part II (2007), in which you should seriously just go to the frigging beach or something…
Joy (1983), in which someone finally made a daddy-issues movie that doesn’t totally suck…
Mondo Trasho (1969), in which getting run over by a transvestite in a Cadillac is merely the start of the adventure…
Reflections of Light (1988), which I guess doesn’t totally suck, either…
Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1988), in which there are even weirder things than robot cancer…
and…
Valley of the Zombies (1946), in which both valleys and zombies apparently cost too much money.

It may be overboard, but it is welcome!

RE: Banshee!!!: Pretty much in line w/ your assessment of it: liked the critter, didn’t like much else. The ending in particular infuriated me…not the one you mention, although that was bad as well, but the blatantly obvious footnote to it.
RE: The Hostel movies: I can’t say I loved it, but I liked the first one a bit more than you. I feel this was mostly because the last act had me rolling, so I was left feeling favorable towards it at the end. I can’t argue w/ you many complaints toward it, though.
I’ve never gotten around to the second one, although I did catch the first few minutes once. It just didn’t seem like it’d be any better than the first. Your review has changed my mind on that, and I’m going to make a note to give it a chance.

Hi El Santo.
Just wanted to say thanks for the reviews – really enjoyed working through your site (“work” being a very inapt term). Some very incisive, funny, lively writing.
Before the other Cabal members feel left out, it was your site that led me here, and I’ve enjoyed their thoughts equally.
Best of all is the stuff your and their write-ups have made me specifically look out for: always a treat. Thank you, DVD.
On a less-related note, I’d like to tip the hat for prompting me to re-watch Phantom of the Paradise recently. I’m also a musician – and while I’d argue that the Rocky Horror Picture Show songs are mostly great… Don’t worry, I’m not one of those sad twerps who drags up to watch it in the cinema… your assessment of poor old Winslow Leach’s tone-deaf pomp ditties was just right. Wonderful film, unbelievably cruddy music. God, it was fun! Kind of want to watch it again now. That can’t be right.
Regards – and to all Cabalists (Kabbalists? Nah, wrong site…) Matt
