Perhaps the qualitative difference had to do with the fact that, except for the first series you list, few of those series actually felt bold enough to introduce the paranormal or significantly advanced beyond contemporary technology.

The “Backward-looking Rose Colored Glasses” syndrome. The complainers seem to think that every movie in the past was about the same level of quality as “Casablanca” or “Citizen Kane”. They completely forget all the B-movies and programmers and serials; the dozens of “Charlie Chan” and “Hopalong Cassidy” movies….
