Even when you consider the quality of many slashers from the 1980s, The Forest is way below average for the genre.

Something I think is also compelling about slashers is the ascending order of morality, aka slutty chick dies first, final girl is a virgin or at least faithful to her boyfriend; and most of the victims are so annoying that, as you say, one’s happy to see them die.
I wonder how effective it might be to overdub John with “had an affair with her when she was eleven” and “the new editions are truer to my artistic vision”.
(Congratulations on 700 reviews.)

I have trouble arguing with the issues you describe (surprised you didn’t mention the awful soundtrack and some too-dark-to-see night shots as well), but I actually found myself liking the characters, and enjoying their interplay (the younger couple I thought had good chemistry, and the two guys made convincing long-time friends). I actually cared about them, unlike most slasher victims. Although, honestly, marketing this as a slasher is really not right; it’s backwoods survival horror with a couple dashes of slasher seasoning and a dollop of something else I don’t want to mention (since you didn’t either) thrown in. Anyway, I’d probably recommend it since it did enough I liked or was surprised by to leave me more favorably disposed to it than not, although I’m certainly not putting it anywhere near Black Christmas or The Burning. YMMV and all that.
My brief review at the BMMB is here, assuming you’re interested…and that I managed to do this right again. Warning: spoilers.
