As I understand it, since about 2000, Lance Henriksen spends much of his time making pottery – his IMDb list continues to grow, but he seems to like doing many small parts rather than committing months of his life at a time to a few big ones. Like Michael Caine, if you employ him, you get the full professional job, and if your production is otherwise basically amateurish he can tend to swamp the actors who are on-screen for longer.

I love this film!
You’re right about getting some monster stuff early, of course, but I think the other point of the flashback is that he’s seen for himself what the monster will do—and goes ahead anyway.
This is a clever and wise twist, but at the same time I found it a little vague. Was Ed feeling the agonizing pain Pumpkinhead’s victims were going through? Or was he just experiencing torment in general? The movie never makes this clear enough.
I’ve always just interpreted this as him seeing through Pumpkinhead’s eyes and experiencing what the creature sees and feels as it kills. It’s agonizing because Ed isn’t a killer and because he’s feeling himself merge more and more with Pumpkinhead.
After all, that link between the Ed and the demon he summoned is what the whole climax hinges on.

That makes sense. Thank you for sharing your interpretation!
