Van Cleef had a great presence whether he was playing a hero or a villain. When I read the novel Shane I pictured a young Van Cleef as Shane. Out of all the actors I’ve seen in Westerns he had the right combination of mysteriousness and badness and steel. Good looking but not exactly handsome. The movie version isn’t horrible but Alan Ladd is no Lee Van Cleef.
