From Indonesia’s Maxima Pictures comes a lopsided mix of horror and bad comedy. This movie is so ill-proportioned that the entire last 20 minutes have nothing at all to do with the plot. In fact, the whole mess wouldn’t even be worth mentioning — if it weren’t for the necrophilia, which raises the tone of the flick for a few brief moments.

I find something horridly fascinating in the thought of a film whose redeeming feature is necrophilial sex…

Yeah. You know the movie is bad when a guy can come home reeking of cadaverine and putrescine and still stink less than the comic relief.

Very interesting review – is there a website on foreign horror films you’d recommend or do you pick these flicks more or less randomly?
As for the clueless police and the “no one seems to know they were dating” bits, unfortunately, I think this is closer to real life than it should be and not just a case of a convenient horror-movie universe – I’ve lived in Thailand for a couple of years and the police was horribly corrupt and incompetent and I’d guess that Indonesia’s police force is probably just as bad, if not worse.

Mark, a lot of these movies are available to watch on YouTube… many of them (including this one) with English subs. Just do a search on keywords such as “pocong”, or “kuntilanak”, and you’ll get more viewing material than you know what to do with. The video quality leaves something to be desired, but it’s a good start at getting used to modern Indonesian horror. If fuzzy video in multiple slowly-loading parts is too annoying for you, the actual movies themselves are surprisingly easy to find, through either legitimate or slightly-less-than-legitimate means; either way, they’re not terribly expensive. Google is your friend.
About the police: I guess I got put off by the fact that Leo and Maya run into the standard “police checkpoint that gets called off just in time” gag. I still find it hard to believe that nobody, not even their friends, seemed to know Leo and Ranti were dating.
