I’m surprised that The Water Babies is badly directed, since Lionel Jeffries made what I consider two excellent children’s films, The Railway Children and The Amazing Mr Blunden. Well, even Shakespeare had his off days. Ever read The Two Gentlemen of Verona ? Is that James Mason in the top hat ? It looks more like Timothy Spall, but he isn’t in the movie. It doesn’t look like Bernard Cribbens either. They really did use small boys to clean chimneys, since it was cheaper than buying long enough brushes. The poor kids often got cancer from all that soot. I recall reading the Charles Kingsley book when I was a child, but I can’t recall anything specific about the plot. It was probably different than the movie, though.

Yes, that’s the top-hatted James Mason on the DVD box art. I haven’t read the source novel, but from what I uncovered in my research, the novel’s story and the movie’s story differ considerably.

“the screenplay doesn’t really give out any real explanation as to why these characters decide to join Tommy on his quest”
Didn’t he save the lobster from a trap?

I don’t recall any dialogue from the join-upers that definitely indicated why they were joining Tommy, whether as a gesture of thanks or something else.

Maybe they just didn’t have anything else to do that day. 😉

I used to love this one as a kid. While being very aware, as I got older, that it was probably better I never went back to watch it again.
