I think the thing about a film with a writer-director-star (etc.) is that nobody is in a position to tell him “hey, Bob, we can’t do it this way”. So you end up with a film that’s a lot closer to one person’s vision, meaning it’s more likely to be an outlier, but whether it’s an outlier towards the good or bad is a whole separate question.
