I’ll be mostly eschewing movie reviews for November (except, of course, for the Roger Corman roundtable — I wouldn’t risk dissing our patron saint!), as I’ll be throwing my efforts into NaNoWriMo (that’s National Novel Writing Month). You can check my progress in the widget on the sidebar of my blog, NathanShumate.com.

Yeah, I’m trying the NaNoWriMo thing again myself. So far I’m at 3822 words, which is behind you according to your word count widget, but still ahead of schedule (especially since most of that was yesterday; I don’t really expect to get much done on it today until this evening). I think in the past I’ve succeeded twice and failed three times (gotten too busy to keep up with the word count), though the two times I’ve succeeded they were stories based on copyrighted properties that I couldn’t publish even if they were cleaned up. This time I’m working with an idea that, if I finish the book and then spend some time after NaNoWriMo on edits and rewrites, I think could actually result in a publishable manuscript. Though of course that remains to be seen.
Oddly, I have a much better track record with 24-Hour Comic Day than with NaNoWriMo, even though it’s rather a more grueling experience; while I’m 2 for 5 on the latter, on the former I’m 6 for 6. I guess part of the reason may be that 24-Hour Comic Day doesn’t leave room for procrastination… you only have twenty-four hours, so you’ve got to spend all those 24 hours on the comic. In NaNoWriMo, though, it’s far too easy to put off the writing, on the rationale that hey, if I don’t do it today, I can always catch up tomorrow. Which then, of course, may not end up happening.
Going to try not to fall into that trap this time, though…

There’s also Script Frenzy in April, a challenge to write a full-length screenplay (100 pages) in one month — which, after NaNoWriMo, would seem like luxury.

Dang, Nate, one of the bright moments of my Fridays is coming to work, turning on the computer, and reading whatever review you posted the evening before. Now you’re robbing me of that (for three weeks). Boo, sir. I say boo. 😉

Script Frenzy I’ve never tried, but maybe in 2011…
